15 April 2009

Description:

Vice President,Goodluck Jonathan, has said that the global economic downturn and dwindling prices of crude oil in the international market have necessitated the drive for Nigeria to diversify her economic base.

Speaking weekend at the Okuku Day celebration in Osun State , the vice president who represented President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, emphasised that for Nigeria to be one of the 20 largest economies in the world by 2020, there was the need for the country to focus on areas where she will have economic advantage.

He assured that with the right institutional and structural frameworks, agriculture, solid minerals and tourism sectors of the economy would be developed to reduce poverty and unemployment. Jonathan affirmed Federal Government's resolve to evolve policies and programmes towards enhancing the welfare and well-being of the citizens.

He noted that the level of growth and development which this Administration was committed to achieving would not be realisable without the firm support and productive partnership of all Nigerians.

He appreciated Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State and the people of Okuku community for their self effort towards the development of the community and the State in general.

Earlier, Oyinlola, stated that in order to avert the negative impact of the global economic crisis, the State was focusing on agriculture.
