Description:
A group of hackers took over the website belonging to the Economic Financial Crimes Commission( EFCC) late last week.
The "Naija Cyber Hactivist" said they took over the EFCC's website in an effort to fight against strict Internet censorship imposed by the Nigerian government.
The hackers are calling their mission "Operation: Say No To Internet Censorship". The groups reasoning and other claims were posted on the EFCC website. The EFCC webmasters have now restored the original site homepage.
"It is clear that the government takes us for fools. It is clear that they would rather block all chance of expression of the African youth's aspirations for change," the hackers noted in a message that appeared on the hacked website.
The message also went further by declaring an Internet war, if the Federal Government continues to censor Internet usage in the country.
"Any effort made to Censor the Internet will therefore result to a state of war between NaijaCyberHactivists (with well meaning Nigerians on our side) and the Nigerian Government should they find themselves so inclined to impose censorship upon the Internet," the hackers included in their message.
EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi, confirmed that it is the fifth time the Commission's website has been attacked. He blamed the assault on corrupt politicians, saying the volume of information on the site poses a lot of threats to some of the people the EFCC prosecutes.
He also assured that that all hands are on deck to arrest brains behind the action.
Hackers have hit other government websites this year as well including the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) website.
