Nigerian city's streets calm after violence

02 August 2009

Description:

Banks and markets have reopened in the city of Maiduguri after five days of fierce fighting between police and a radical Islamist sect.

The streets of Maiduguri have been cleared of bodies and blood spilled during gunbattles that left at least 200 people dead in the Borno state capital.

Borno Police Commissioner Christopher Dega says the Boko Haram sect members are likely in hiding and may be using the current calm to regroup.

He says a mass burial will be held for the victims, but did not say when. No official death toll has been released as officials are still counting bodies.

Boko Haram is seeking to impose strict Islamic Shariah law in the multi-religious country. Troops killed the sect leader Thursday.
