Workshop on EC Nigeria Cooperation in the Energy Sector holds in Abuja

A workshop on European Union and Nigeria Cooperation on Energy was held in Abuja on Thursday, October 8. The workshop, was be hosted by the Delegation of the European Commission to Nigeria, took place at the Energy House, Plot 1300, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti Street, Garki II, Abuja.

Dignitaries invited included the Ministers and Ministers of State of Petroleum Resources, Power, Planning, Information and Communications, and Environment and the Group Managing Director and other senior executives of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

The objective of the workshop was to open a dialogue between the EC and Nigeria about potential support from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF).

Consultants were hired by the European Commission to carry out the prefeasibility study and to develop a Profile for the Nigerian Energy sector. The consultants presented their findings to the invited international audience of all the stakeholders in the Nigerian energy sector, including Ministers, other representatives of the Ministries invited, State Governors, European Union Ambassadors, NNPC and PHCN and their subsidiaries, Nigerian and international oil companies, private sector energy consumer companies and other interested stakeholders.

The EC believes that development of the Nigerian energy sector can be best achieved by ensuring that the interests of all participants are properly aligned. The EC wants to support projects that ‘add value' for Nigeria and are coherent with the Nigerian governments or EU Member States' own plans and policies.

The workshop offered participants the opportunity to discuss findings of an Energy Pre-feasibility. This study is within the framework of the strategic partnership and cooperation between Nigeria and the EU on Energy. The importance of this workshop to vision 20-20-20 of the current administration cannot be overstated.

The programme is financed by the European Development Fund. It is managed by the National Planning Commission in Partnership with the European Commission Delegation to Nigeria.
